Fall 2014 will mean a new exhibit for the Columbus Museum of Art.
In partnership with the Pizzuti Collection, the CMA will host the work of Ori Gersht.
Gersht is a prominent artist in the photography and video field, as well as a professor of photography at the University for the Creative Arts in Rochester, Kent, England. He is a native of Tel Aviv, Israel, and often uses his memories of growing up there to inspire his art.
The CMA and the Pizzuti Collection will collaborate to show three of Gersht's short films, The Evaders,Will You Dance For Me and The Offering.
Each film has a different and unrelated story content, from a riveting tale of an attempt to escape Nazi occupied France, to a Holocaust survivor turned Israeli dancer's defiance at Aushwitz and finally bullfighting.
However the films all have a couple things in common thematically. True to Gersht's themes across his work, the films find the beauty and heroism within these darkly true tales. Gersht uses history as his base and then pulls out the intricate strings of each individual story.
On the Puzziti website, Tyler Cann, associate curator of contemporary art for the Columbus Museum Art described Gersht's work as “...deeply emotional, poetic, and yet, somehow, unsentimental.” Expect to experience both beauty and violence in the most thought provoking of ways.
The Evaders will show from September 5th to October 11th, followed by Will You Dance For Me from October 11th to November 15th, and finishing with The Offering from November 18th to December 27th.
