The Actors’ Theatre of Columbus opens its 2016 season, To Tell the Truth, on May 26 with the timeless Shakespearean classic, Othello.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus. Since its founding in 1982, the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus has been dedicated to presenting classic works incorporated with contemporary themes for modern audiences.
Including Othello, all of the productions for this season free of charge and take place outdoors, at Schiller Park in German Village.
“As an arts organization with the incredible privilege of presenting free theater in a public park, we have an obligation to reflect and celebrate the diversity of our community,” says Philip J. Hickman, artistic director at the Actors’ Theatre. “Classic theater is classic because it speaks to the human condition and inspires our lives.”
This production of Othello is directed by Matt Hermes, a long-time participant in the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus.
The cast and creative team work together to tell the tale of the honored war general, Othello, and his journey through a web of lies and deceit spun by his supposedly trustworthy friend, Iago. The play will engage with themes of deception, gender equality, race and class; all of which make a piece that is around 400 years old still captivating today.
Taking the stage are Christopher C. Austin III (Othello), Lindsey Fisher (Desdemona), Matthew Michael Moore (Iago), David Tull (Cassio) and David Widder-Varhegyi (Roderigo).
Shows begin at 8 p.m. and run Thursdays through Sundays until June 19. The show is free and open to the public. Seats can be reserved in advance for a fee. Click here to learn more.
