From May 6-8, the BalletMet will perform Sleeping Beauty, choreographed by BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang, at the Ohio Theatre. Dancers will twirl in beautiful costuming to a classic Tchaikovsky score.
The BalletMet will tell a similar tale to the 1959 Disney animated film of the same title. Cursed by an evil fairy, the beautiful Princess Aurora is destined to die after pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. A good fairy partially reverses the curse, and Aurora instead falls into a 100 year slumber, only to be awoken by the kiss of a prince.
For Mother’s Day, the BalletMet will host a Mother’s Day Brunch complete with mimosas, a buffet and some “surprises” according to balletmet.org, prior to the matinee performances of Sleeping Beauty on May 7 and 8. Both events begin at noon in the Galbreath Pavilion and tickets range from $100 to $250.
On May 6, the BalletMet will hold a Dine with the Artistic Director event before the opening night performance of Sleeping Beauty, in which ticket holders can learn all about the making of Sleeping Beauty and what goes on behind the scenes from Liang himself. This event will take place from 6 – 7:45 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel Capitol Square. Tickets to Dine with the Artist range from $65 to $125.
Among others, Taiwan-born choreographer Edwaard Liang’s ballets have been performed by the Mariinsky Ballet, the New York City Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet. He was named one of the top choreographers to watch by Dance Magazine in 2006 and joined the BalletMet in 2013.
Tickets to Sleeping Beauty, performed by the BalletMet, range from $45 to $90. To learn more, click here.
