On May 7, Columbus will get a taste of Louisville when Scioto Downs Racino brings to central Ohio all the excitement, suspense and stakes that comes with the 142nd Kentucky Derby. Because the Scioto Downs Racino is the only place in Columbus to wager on the Kentucky Derby, there’s no place better to go without leaving central Ohio.
Scioto Downs’ Kentucky Derby Party is an all-day event, but the race begins at 6:30, so it’s crucial for wagers to be in before then. The party will feature live music, barbecue and special drinks.
For those not placing bets or looking for some extra fun while keeping in Kentucky Derby fashion, the first 50 partygoers can enter the Fancy Hat Contest at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Scioto Downs Breezeway. First through fifth place winners will win money in the form of Free Plays at the Racino; first place will with $250 in Free Plays.
The 142nd Kentucky Derby follows last year’s win by American Pharoah, an event that boasted a peak of 17.9 million viewers as the horse crossed the finish line with jockey Victor Espinoza. American Pharoah would go on to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, crowning American Pharoah with the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, a title that hadn’t been achieved since Affirmed in 1978.
