If you’ve turned on the radio, you have probably heard a soulful sounding tune with a hip hop beat that gets lodged in your head for the entire commute home.
This satire on popular music is “Royals” by 16-year old Lorde.
The song is this New Zealander’s breakout single and is currently on heavy rotation. The tune shows no genre bounds. Pop stations play the song and Power 107.5 has it on.
It’s catchy. It’s contagious. It’s different.
This young artist is finding a way to blend the vocal stylings of Adele with the R and B instrumentals of Drake and other hot artists. This combination makes for a brilliant transcendence between genres and opens the doors to a huge audience.
“Royals” is one of five songs off her The Love Club EP. However, she has a repertoire of other songs, boasting similar, but refreshing elements. “Tennis Courts” and “Team” offer metaphors and beautiful simplicity.
Lorde seemingly took over the radio waves over night, but there’s a good chance that she’s here to stay.
Thank the Lorde.
