Though she was born in Chicago, Kathy’s career took off after she moved to California and joined the comedy troupe Los Angeles Groundlings. She built her resume with guest appearances on shows such as “ER” and “Seinfield.” She soon received attention as a stand up comedian and has appeared on networks including HBO, ABC, NBC, and MTV. Kathy won two consecutive Emmys in 2006 and 2007 for her reality show, “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.”
Kathy’s stand up show appeared on Broadway in March 2011, when she sold more than $1 million worth of tickets in a total of eight days. She has performed stand-up specials for Bravo, two of which were nominated for Emmys, though all received rave reviews. Kathy released a comedy album in 2008. The album, For Your Consideration, received a Grammy nomination and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. She has been nominated for a Grammy twice since then for her albums released in 2010 and 2011. She became a bestselling author in 2009 when her autobiography was published, entitled Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin.
Kathy was awarded the Vanguard Award at the 2009 GLAAD Media Awards. She has been recognized for her tremendous work with the GLBTQ community. She has many other awards and nominations from organizations including Toys for Tots, Ladies Home Journal and Aid for Aids.
