David Mamet’s 1972 comedy The Duck Variations will hit the Columbus stage this Thursday.
Central Ohio’s professional touring company, A Portable Theatre, will perform the play at 8 p.m., Aug. 20, at Woodlands Tavern at 1200 W. Third Ave.
The Duck Variations is one of Mamet’s first plays. Mamet is one of America’s most respected dramatists, essayists and film directors. He has penned various other plays, such as Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo and Speed-the-Plow and films such as The Verdict, The Spanish Prisoner and House of Games.
It follows two elderly men who meet each other in a park. Both men are incredibly stubborn and opinionated – and also misinformed. In the 14 scenes, George and Emil bicker around the weather, hunting, outer space, nature, pollution, money, law, friendship, mortality and the Majestic Life of the Duck.
Veterans of many Central Ohio stage productions, Jonathan Putnam and Geoffrey Nelson, will play George and Emil.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for attendees interested in dinner and cocktails prior to the show. Appetizers and drinks will also be available throughout the performance.
A Portable Theatre strives to bring performances to communities throughout the Central Ohio area. Venues include theaters, churches, libraries, retirement communities, schools, corporate board rooms and, with this most recent production, a tavern.
The performance of The Duck Variations will span about one hour. A cast discussion will follow immediately after.
Tickets are $20. They can be purchased at www.aportabletheatre.com.
