The Columbus Dance Theatre will bring a Shakespearean classic to life with the sounds of a live orchestra coupled with the world premiere of Tim Veach’s original choreography. Their upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet will show at the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theatre May 20-21.
Everyone knows the late-1500s classic: Star-crossed lovers come from feuding families, separated by generations of ill will. A young romance, drama, murder and more ensues in the timeless tragedy. Come to experience the heart-wrenching beauty of these talented dancers as they create a fresh perspective on an age-old classic that has captivated hearts and minds for centuries.
The ballet follows the same plot as Shakespeare’s original work, but uses movement rather than words measured out in iambic pentameter to tell the story of the two young lovers.
There will be performances Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $30, senior tickets are $25 and student tickets are $15.
Veach, the artistic director and founder of the Columbus Dance Theatre, has choreographed a fresh take on the ballet, using the original Prokofiev score that dates back to before the 1940s. The music will be performed by a live orchestra under the direction of maestro Jason Hiester.
The cast for this production will grace the stage with more than 100 performers that will pirouette and jeté across the floor to tell the great tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
