This month, BalletMet will present a modern and exciting twist on a famous opera and iconic 19th century story.
Carmen.maquia, choreographed by Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, is based off of Prosper Mérimée novella Carmen. It also pays homage to George Bizet’s opera, adding bullfights, fortune-telling and a love story.
The Chicago Sun-Times called Carmen.maquia “emotionally fierce” and “riveting from start to finish.”
This is the first time BalletMet will perform a full-length ballet choreographed by Sansano. Sansano used the Cubism art movement for inspiration while crafting Carmen.maquia. He returns to Columbus following the world premiere of Lovely Together in 2015 and 18+1 from the company’s 2013-14 season. Sansano, an award-winning choreographer, has earned first place in competitions such as the Ricard Moragas in Barcelona.
