At the end of the month, Otterbein University’s Riley Auditorium of the Battelle Fine Arts Center will be home to improvisational artists and world music.
Otterbein University’s Department of Music has announced the dates for two upcoming auditorium performances at the Arts Center, 170 W. Park St.
At 6 p.m. Jan. 24 will be a “Carnatic Music” concert presented by Dhvani, the Indian Performing Arts Society of Central Ohio, featuring a traditional genre of southern Indian music with Professor Trivandrum Seethalakshmi contributing vocals and accompaniment from Vvs Murari and Poovalur Sriji.
At 8 p.m. Jan. 28, saxophone instructor Jay Miglia will host a faculty recital with guest pianist Dean Marcellana. The two will perform a unique twist on conventional recital known as “third-stream” music. The performers will read their music traditionally, but they may also improvise chords to create an organic show in which any combination of musical segments is possible. The concert will include pieces by Bob Mintzer, Raymon Ricker, Bill Dobbins and Phil Woods.
