The stage adaptation of the classic Disney film, The Beauty and the Beast, returned to Columbus’ Palace Theatre early this week and will continue performances through Sunday.
The Tony Award-winning musical features many of the familiar characters and songs from the 1991 film, but also includes songs specifically written for the Broadway production.
The Beauty and the Beast, derived from an 18th century French fairy tale, tells the story of Belle, a young girl from a small, country town. Belle is destined to break a curse cast upon the Beast, who is actually a young prince. The Beast needs Belle’s love to lift the spell, or else he and his servants will be doomed forever.
The show opened on Broadway in 1994 and, before it closed in 2007, became the ninth longest running show in Broadway history. The original Broadway production won a Tony Award for best costume design. The tour launched in 2010 and has since been seen by nearly 3 million people across the nation. The production has also been translated into 9 different languages and has been performed in 22 countries.
