The Columbus Symphony Orchestra will offer a taste of the finest works of Russian composers
over the course of two days.
The CSO’s Russian Winter Festival, to be held Jan. 8 and 9 at the Ohio Theatre, features two different Russian-themed performances.
On Jan. 8, acclaimed conductor Rossen Milanov will present Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The night will also feature a suite from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture and Stravinsky’s Circus Polka. The first set of the two-day event, this program offers the crème de la crème of Russia’s musical contributions.
On Jan. 9, Milanov will return to the Ohio Theatre to present Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concert No. 3 in D Minor and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor. Guest pianist Natasha Paremski will accompany the orchestra. This set of monumental scores is the second and final performance of the festival.
At 7 p.m. each night, there will be a 30-minute discussion in the theatre about the works to be performed. After the Friday performance, patrons are invited to join CSO musicians in the Ohio Theatre’s Galbreath Pavilion for a vodka tasting.
