What's Up, Dog?
William Wegman brings his quirky collection to the Wex
A weimaraner dog sits on top of a box, looking straight ahead. Three of his paws sit calmly on the edge of the box. His right hind leg, however, veers out onto another box sitting beside him.

What do you call this?

Art.

The photograph depicting such a set up is called Connector, and it's one example of the work done by artist William Wegman.

You can see this and more when Wegman’s retrospective exhibit, Funney/Strange, opens at the Wexner Center on Sept. 20, running through Dec. 30.

Wegman does more than take pictures of pooches. He is known for using photography, painting, collages and video as his mediums of choice.

Karen Simonian, spokesperson for the Wexner Center, says that the Wexner and Wegman were a natural combination.

“While he has broad appeal, he’s been innovative in the field and worked in different kinds of media. Wexner, being a multi-disciplinary field, was a perfect fit for Wegman,” she says.

Wegman’s national tour was already a lock before the Wexner Center decided they wanted in.

“We have a history with Wegman – he worked here in the early ‘90s on a video project. We offered him some support,” she says.

Because of this, Simonian says, Wegman was open to bringing his show to the Wexner, making the venue the only Midwestern stop for the tour.

In fact, Wegman will be creating a new photographic attraction for the Wexner Center in the café area.

“It’s a surprise, but it features dogs,” teases Simonian.

Dogs are actually what a lot of people know Wegman for.

“People will come for the dogs and they will get more than they expected,” she says. “It’s funny, humorous and quirky. I think it will be broadly appealing for all ages. I think kids will love it.”

Speaking of kids, there will be a whole series of events that revolve around the Wegman exhibit, including a “Family Day” on Sunday, Sept. 23. The day will feature interactive gallery tours, screenings of Wegman’s short films which were made in the 1970s and 1980s for Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, as well as a variety of workshops.

Other events include “Dog Day at the Wex” where visitors can bring their own dogs for a parade, activities on Oct. 7; a discussion of Wegman’s work on Oct.18; a nationally-known expert discussion on “Why We Like Dogs (And They Like Us) on Nov. 1; as well as walk-in tours, teen programs, and programs for schools and teachers throughout the run of the show.

Gallery admission is always free. For more information, check out www.wexarts.org or call 614-292-3535.
