Westerville to honor the fallen with Sept. 11 processional and memorial service

The City of Westerville will pay tribute to the Sept. 11 attacks by escorting a piece of steel from the World Trade Center to Fire Station 111, where it will become a permanent display in First Responders Park.

The procession for the steel, known as C-40, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11 and will make its way through uptown. The procession's route will follow State Street from Huber Village Boulevard north to West Main Street, ending at Station 111 (400 W. Main St.). A public memorial service will follow the procession.

Community members are encouraged to observe the procession and participate in the memorial service. Organizers also request that residents wear red, white and blue and bring American flags to commemorate the occasion.

C-40 will become a focal point at First Responders Park, which is scheduled for completion in 2010 during the 150th anniversary of the Westerville Division of Fire. The piece of steel formerly spanned the 98th-100th floors of the World Trade Center's north tower before it was struck in the terrorist attacks. Firefighter and paramedic Tom Ullom has worked for seven years to bring the steel to Westerville.
