Westerville’s Honor Flight program hopes to soar to new heights this year with a goal to raise enough money to send two full flights of World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 2.
Last year, the program raised enough money to fly a plane of 76 veterans to the nation’s capital. It was the first time the community sponsored the program, whose mission is to "safely transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifices," according to Honor Flight Columbus' Web site.
But to achieve this year’s goal, the program must raise $25,000, as it costs $250 to sponsor each veteran.
The first fundraiser, a pancake breakfast, will be held June 26 from 7:30-11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, 393 E. College Ave. World War II fighting gear will be on display at the event, and veterans are encouraged to come dressed in uniforms and decorations.
Tickets are $6 at the door, with all proceeds going to Honor Flight Columbus. Veterans eat free.
The program will also seek donations during Westerville’s Independence Day Parade on July 3. Spectators can look for the Honor Flight Float, which features a replica of the national World War II Memorial, and are encouraged to give money for this year’s flights.
Finally, Honor Flight Columbus will sell pulled-pork sandwiches in a “Pork-A-Palooza” fundraiser Aug. 27 during 4th Friday in Uptown Westerville.
