It’s that time of year again for BalletMet Columbus to perform its timeless classic, The Nutcracker. The performance runs Dec. 11-23 at the Ohio Theatre, 39 State St.
The production has been a holiday tradition for Columbus for more than 30 years, with its whimsical costumes, enchanting choreography and the captivating music of Tchaikovsky.
Although the company will be using the same ballet as first debuted in 2004 by BalletMet Artistic Director Gerard Charles and theatre artist Robert Post, there are some changes that will hopefully capture the attention of the audience.
This year the company was able to invest in a new Sugar Plum Fairy costume which is sure to delight audiences with its new vibrant and vivid colors, as well as intricate beading and designs. There are also slight changes in choreography that will be brought to the state. Other than that, you'll just have to see for yourself.
“There are some new magical elements,” says BalletMet Communications Manager Jennifer Sciantarelli, “But we are sure to keep those a secret.”
Following the Columbus performance, BalletMet will also tour the production to Syracuse, N.Y., for its first engagement with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.
“The Nutcracker reminds us of treasured times with our family, of a shared adventure or a special moment,” Charles says. “My aim with BalletMet’s production is to keep The Nutcracker an entertaining and special event that is both fresh and rekindles a warm nostalgia.”
This year, Nutcracker patrons can bring a jar of peanut butter or other food donation to the theater to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank through "Feed the Nutcracker, Feed Columbus," presented by BalletMet with support from Kroger. Participants will receive a gift in exchange for their donation.
