Tribute to a Tenor
Opera Columbus honors Mario Lanza

Opera Columbus is honoring the late tenor Mario Lanza in a tribute concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Palace Theatre, 34 W. Broad St.

Lanza was a matinee idol who lived from 1921 to 1959. He became popular in the late 1940s and 50s and was known for his astounding tenor voice equaling the legendary Enrico Caruso. He even represented Caruso in the 1950 biopic, The Great Caruso, in addition to other feature films.

“He was a real beloved tenor,” says Susan Ropp, assistant executive director and director of development for Opera Columbus. "He died 50 years ago and it is an anniversary and celebration of his life and career."

This concert features three tenors, Randolph Locke, Gerard Powers and Eduardo Villa, and will also show video clips of Lanza. William Boggs will conduct the concert and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra will perform.

This show will present a selection of pieces Lanza was well known for. These pieces contain selections from classic operas including Turandot, Aida and La Boheme, in addition to songs from operetta and musical theatre.

Tickets range from $10 to $100 with discounts available for students and children. To purchase tickets, call 614-469-0939 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
