Dream a Little Dream
Tony Award winning Dreamgirls makes Columbus debut

When Dreamgirls first opened almost 30 years ago, the fresh new music and heart-warming story revitalized Broadway.

CAPA and Broadway Across America - Columbus present an entirely new production of Dreamgirls Feb. 16 through Feb. 21 at the Palace Theatre, 34 W. Broad St.

“We feel fortunate to be able to bring this new production to Columbus, as it promises to provide the show-stopping numbers and touching performances audiences have come to expect,” says Rolanda Copley, CAPA marketing and public relations associate.

The musical was released as an Academy Award-winning and Golden Globe Award-winning film adaptation in 2006, starring Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and emerging Jennifer Hudson. The current stage revival was launched in November 2009 as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the world-famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

The story follows an up-and-coming 1960s singing girl group, relating the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune. Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White are performing as The Dreamettes when they’re discovered by agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. They quickly become backup singers for rock ‘n’ roll sensation James “Thunder” Early and their careers rise from there.

The beautiful Deena emerges as the group’s star, rather than full-voiced diva Effie, bringing them to a personal and professional crossroads.

Lavish costumes and an innovative set design update the new production. The song Listen, which was written for the film, has also been added due to the stage show due to the film’s success. It will be featured in the second act as a duet between Deena and Effie.

Syesha Mercado (Deena Jones) of American Idol fame joins Broadway veterans Moya Angela (Effie White), Chaz Lamar Shepherd (Cutris Taylor, Jr.), and Chester Gregory (James “Thunder” Early) under the direction of Robert Longbottom.
