Thinking Pink
Columbus entities mark Awareness Month

You may have noticed a little more pink this month than usual - intertwined on NFL players' uniforms, on public banners and everywhere inbetween. October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month and there are several activities going on to fight for a cure.

To help raise both money and awareness for women’s cancers, Saks Fifth Avenue Columbus is partnering with Columbus Cancer Clinic tp host the 2009 KEY TO THE CURE, a charity shopping weekend taking place Oct. 15-18. A percentage of the weekend’s sales will benefit Columbus Cancer Clinic.

Nationwide, Saks stores, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores and www.saks.com will donate 2 percent of sales up to $250,000 from the shopping weekend to local and national women’s cancer organizations and research centers. Additionally, Saks will make a donation of $500,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®.

To launch this year’s event, Saks Fifth Avenue Columbus will host a KEY TO THE CURE kickoff celebration at  6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Saks Fifth Avenue at Polaris. The evening includes a cocktail party and style show featuring local cancer survivors. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue. Visit www.saks.com for more information.

Also, Undone Lingerie and Shoes in the Short North partnered up with the American Cancer Society during the Oct. 3 Gallery Hop to honor those touched by breast cancer by launching its Battle of the Bras.

To participate in Battle of the Bras: decorate a bra; give it a catchy name; and email the ACS a digital photo. The ACS will post a picture of the bra, and visitors can vote for their favorite, at $5 per vote. The winner will be chosen Oct. 31, and will receive a gift basket.

Battle of the Bras raises money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Making Strides raises money for Society-funded breast cancer research, as well as free mammograms and help for local families. In eight years, Columbus Strides participants have raised nearly $1 million to fight breast cancer.

More than 145 Making Strides walks are held nationwide each year to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, educate people about ways to reduce their risk, and empower communities to join the fight. Since 1993, nearly five million walkers have raised more than $340 million through Making Strides. In 2008, 600,000 walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to help fight breast cancer.
