Life in the Navy requires countless hours of training, discipline, honor and the highest rate of physical fitness. While most people may not be able to handle such an environment, it is now possible to obtain some of these characteristics without nearly as much commitment.
Designed by former Navy Seal Randy Hetrick, the new TRX suspension training workout system is a revolutionary piece of equipment that utilizes body weight and suspension to ensure an ultimate level of physical fitness.
Unlike cardiovascular workouts or weight lifting, the TRX is a portable unit, which is suspended from an anchor point about 6 feet high. The component hangs as a single piece, which separates into two straps, each with handles and foot cradles.
According to Owner and Trainer of the Fitness Boot Camp of Columbus, Dale Gresson, the TRX system is like no other fitness tool.
“We get a lot of people that want to use TRX because it’s totally different than anything they’ve ever seen before,” he says.
While weight lifting workouts target specific muscles, the TRX unit involves the entire body with each exercise. “You have to involve all of your body, which is a little more normal for most people. The exercises are geared around what we call functional training,” Gresson says. “It’s a little bit more everyday-ish.”
The unit, which can be used to do 250 different exercises, also offers rehab workouts in addition to muscle strengthening and toning. The exercises performed with the TRX can be easily modified.
“The TRX can become a support or an assisted piece of equipment,” Gresson says. “You control your own intensity.”
Similar to any form of exercise, the challenge of the workouts increases with time, much like the results of the training. “You don’t just throw people in with gladiators. Once they have reached a certain level we make sure we use TRX as much as they can,” says Gresson. “The things you do on a day-to-day basis are the things that are going to improve because you are building muscle.”
For those who are looking for a weight-loss miracle or a fat burning solution, Gresson advises looking elsewhere. “People are not going to use TRX and drop massive amounts of weight. It’s not that type of product,” he says. “It gives you an opportunity to improve your overall health because it’s based off of functional training principles.”
While TRX suspension training unit has been gaining popularity throughout the United States, it has just recently become an option in the Columbus area. Through Gresson’s facility, he offers two boot camp sessions that incorporate the TRX into the workouts, as well as a 12-week training program that focuses solely on the TRX unit.
