The Great Wide Open
Short North bringing back Art Al Fresco

The Short North has many great galleries for visitors to visit, but on Saturday, Aug. 15, regional artists will use the entire district as a stage for Art Al Fresco II.

Hosted by The Wood Companies, Art al Fresco II celebrates Columbus’ artistic spirit by displaying creative works and talents all over the neighborhood.

“It’s an immersion in all things art. The creation of art, the display of art - public art,” explains John Angelo, executive director of the Short North Business Association. “We want to inspire, engage and amuse visitors while spotlighting the power of public art. The Short North is always a destination for the experiential, and on this day the experiences are ultra-concentrated and easily accessible.”

The free event consists of three specific components: The Usual Suspects, Unexpected Guests and PeeP show. The galleries of the Short North will have enhanced experiences with special installations, artists at work and interactive elements. Artwork will also be on display in non-gallery venues such as restaurants and boutiques.

Three dozen visiting artists will create temporary public art installations in outdoor spaces in the district including graffiti in specific locations. Some of the artwork will be on display longer than Aug. 15.

In addition, celebrity impersonators, mimes and theatrical troupes will appear in display windows and other areas of the district to entertain visitors.

The first Art al Fresco started last August after local artist Melissa Vogley Woods had an idea for a “Public Art Day.” She met with Angelo who was able to pull in galleries such as The Art Exchange, Ohio Art League and Kathryn Gallery to help. This year’s event planning started in January and will be a different experience.

“No two years will be alike because the roster of artists changes so dramatically and the locations change dramatically.” Angelo says. “What’s happening in the galleries changes. It may seem familiar, but it will be completely different.”

Some highlights for the day include Artist Scott Dooley demonstrating techniques in sculpting with clay, a performance by Shintower Music and bands provided by CD101.

“It will be nearly impossible to walk half a block and not come across an interaction,” Angelo says. “It's the way life should be... highly experiential, thought provoking and entertaining.”
