The 80's Are Back
Robbie Hart, The Wedding Singer, takes the Columbus stage

A lot of people love the 1998 film The Wedding Singer. But instead of putting the movie in your DVD player, for a limited time, you’ll be able to watch it on stage.

The Broadway musical version will play at the Palace Theatre from Jan. 8-13. Tickets are on sale now.

Allison Thomas, Director of Public Relations for Broadway Across America, says the show follows the movie pretty closely, and is mired in 80s popular culture references.

“There are some differences, there’s more character development,” she adds.

That said, the story follows Robbie Hart, a professional wedding singer going through his own heartache when his fiance leaves him at the altar. The breakup makes it difficult for him to put on a smile during his various wedding jobs, but he eventually finds happiness in a rather unexpected place.

Unlike the theatrical film, this version is a musical, so there are original songs added, to further the storyline.

“All the music is ‘80s themed,” she says.

The show, which originally ran in New York, is making its first national tour and Columbus is the first stop.

“We try to get everything,” she says in regards to bringing shows to Columbus. “We try to get people what they want to see.”

Thomas says the show is “definitely” appropriate for the whole family and “very PG.”

Tickets are priced from $22.50 to $69.50 and are available at the Broadway Across America – Columbus or Ohio Theatre box offices. You can also get tickets through any Ticketmaster outlet, or put them on your credit card by calling 614-431-3600. Tickets are also available at www.BroadwayAcrossAmerica.com.
