Sypmhony gears up for final concert of season

 

As the Westerville Symphony at Otterbein College prepares for its final show of the 2008-2009 season, the symphony will host American composer Lowell Liebermann in residence June 2-6.

 

Liebermann grew up in New York City and began piano studies at 8 years old. At 16, he made his performing debut at Carnegie Recital Hall, playing his Piano Sonata Op.1, which he composed at 15 years old. He attended the Juilliard School of Music, where he earned his doctorate. Liebermann's piece Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed at the June 6 concert.

 

Lowell's residency with the symphony features several public events in addition to rehearsals and educational programs. The public is welcome to attend the following activities:

 

• Meet the Composer: 1–3 p.m. June 3, the Westerville Senior Center
Mr. Liebermann will discuss his life as a composer, focusing on inspiration and process. Time will be reserved for questions. To attend this presentation, call 614-901-6564 to RSVP.


• Young Musicians Presentation: 6:30–8 p.m. June 4, Prestige Music Studios, Powell

Mr. Liebermann will share stories from his life as a composer with students. A masterclass with Christopher Durrenberger, a professor at Wittenberg College and soloist at the June 6 concert, will follow. Call 614-764-4000, ext. 803 to register.

 

The June 6 concert, "The Excitement," will begin at 8 p.m. at the Fritsche Theatre (Cowan Hall at Otterbein College). Tickets are available by visiting www.westervillesymphony.org or by calling 614-899-9000. Tickets will also be available at the door. The cost is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $8 for students.
