George Carruth enjoys tremendous artistic success

With his own unique style, George Carruth’s artistic work is flourishing around the country. As a nationally-renowned concrete sculptor, Carruth has been creating wonderful cast images in stone from completely original designs carved from limestone and clay since 1983. He has produced more than 200 original designs for the home and garden.

Carruth began his career in the corporate realms of illustration and advertising, but then transitioned into founding his own business with wife Deb. For two years, they fed themselves by selling hand carved creations at juried shows and to fine galleries. Art became a major part of their life, stemming from George's unique style.

“I followed my heart. Looking at children’s books and medieval stone and ivory carvings that depicted peasants in the field working, animals and everyday situations,” Carruth says, about his artistic inspiration. “There is a nostalgic charm to my pieces that evokes children’s illustrations or medieval scenes that people can relate to. I don’t try to dazzle people with expensive materials or complicated techniques. I just go for very earthy, warm and friendly images."

Carruth’s profile includes a commission from the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and an ornament for the White House Christmas Tree. His sculptures are sold in more than 3,500 retail stores nationwide. Each piece has a general message being portrayed.

“There's always a nature message, whether it’s classic or more along the lines of a nostalgic children’s book image. Overall, I try to express a relaxed feeling in each piece,” says Carruth.

Most recently, Carruth has delved into an unfamiliar medium: children’s books. It has been his lifelong dream. His first book was The Boy Who Loved Birds and it features the visionary illustrations of Libby Carruth, George’s daughter. Both George and Libby are graduates of the Columbus College of Art and Design.
