The Elvis Presley-inspired Broadway Musical All Shook Up! will rock its way into Columbus this February at Palace Theater.
For one week only, Feb. 13-18, the show will shake up the stage for the Ohio premier of the tour.
The show stars Susan Anton as Miss Sandra, a Golden Globe Nominee for the film Goldengirl, who has most recently performed in Hairspray, a Tony Award winning musical; Joe Mandragona as Chad; and former Broadway actress Jenny Fellner as Natalie Haller.
Fellner comes to the case with TV appearances on Law & Order: SVU, and stage performances Princesses and The 5th Avenue Theatre’s The Boyfriend, which was directed by Oscar Winning actress Julie Andrews. Most notably, Fellner brings her experience after playing the role of Sophie in Broadway’s Mamma Mia!
According to Fellner, crowds have embraced to the rock’n’roll show. “Some cities receive it better than others, but I think for the most part people love it,” she says.
The plot revolves around a small Midwestern town in the ‘50s, a young mechanic (Natalie) who is searching for love, and a rebellious, hip-swiveling guitar player (Chad) who cruises into town and unknowingly steals her heart.
“One day this motorcycle riding … roustabout guy comes into town and shakes everything up,” Fellner says of her on-stage crush. “[Natalie] basically dresses up as a guy to get him to fall for her that way.”
While Natalie focuses her attention on winning the love of the rebellious stranger, she is unaware of the fact that her best friend (Dennis) has unspoken feelings for her.
As Fellner’s character yearns for the intriguing and seemingly Elvis-impersonating newcomer, Fellner admits that she has more similarities with her tomboy, mechanic character than one might think. “There’s things about me that are very much a part of Natalie,” she says. At the same time, Fellner admits she likes bringing her own personal traits to her roles. “There’s definitely a part of me that I bring to every character that I play.”
Growing up in a small town in South Dakota, Fellner can relate to the lackluster lifestyle of her character. “I know what that’s like … the boredom that can start to happen,” she says.
Traveling from California, to Texas, to Wisconsin, the show is scheduled to wrap up in June. “Every once in a while I hear chatter about extending the tour and I think it’d be great,” Fellner says of her experience. “I’m very happy out here and I’m having a lot of fun.”
In addition to being a good experience for the actress, it has also been a way to culture her music taste. Fellner admits that she was not always an Elvis fan, but “I am now,” she says. “There’s a lot of music in the show that I just didn’t even know was out there.”
