Punderson Manor State Park Resort will again offer a convenient and affordable home base for fans of The Great Sled Dog Classic of Northeast Ohio, scheduled this year for Jan. 5 and 6, 2008 in Punderson State Park.
Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, the Sled Dog Classic is the only sled dog event in Ohio attracting mushers from across Ohio and other states. Teams will cover one to six miles through woods and across open fields. The snowy conditions of the northeast Ohio state park make Punderson the perfect location for Ohio’s only sled dog races. The races typically draw more than 500 participants and observers to the picturesque park.
Sponsored by the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Cleveland and Geauga County Tourism Council, the races comprise what is considered one of Ohio’s premier wintertime sporting events. For details, visit www.siberiancleveland.org.
The race will be rescheduled if there is no snow.
Participants and fans can purchase one of the resort’s popular Buckeye or Bed & Breakfast packages to complete their experience. The Buckeye package includes two nights of lodging, two breakfasts for two, one dinner for two and a $25 gift shop certificate. That package is priced at $379 plus tax per couple in a double room for a Friday- and Saturday-night stay. The Bed & Breakfast package includes overnight lodging and breakfast for two for $125 plus tax in a double room on Friday or Saturday night.
Punderson Manor State Park is a great place to play after the races or any time during the winter. The park offers a hill specifically designed for sledding and tobogganing as well as trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Punderson Manor State Park Resort offers 31 rooms and 26 fully furnished two-bedroom housekeeping cabins. All of the cabins feature fireplaces.
