Pilobolus Dance Theatre is one of the world’s most popular — and unusual — dance companies. Founded in 1971 as an experiment in collaborative choreography, Pilobolus has forged a new vision of modern dance, stretching the boundaries of human movement with a dazzling mix of humor, intelligence, physical invention, and raw athleticism. (Pilobolus takes its name from a sun-loving fungus that grows in barnyards and pastures and can throw its spores nearly eight feet despite being less than an inch tall.)
Based in Washington Depot, Connecticut, Pilobolus is a major American dance company of international influence. The company performs for stage and television audiences worldwide — including its recent performance during the 2007 Academy Awards. Its works are in the repertoires of major dance companies and the company has received several prestigious honors including the Berlin Critic’s Prize, the Brandeis Award, the New England Theatre Conference Prize, and a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in cultural programming.
