Miss Pickerington Competes in Miss Ohio International
Sophia Davis Uses Pageantry to Promote Service in Ohio
By: Justin Hoffman
Sophia Davis, representing the city of Pickerington, recently competed in the Miss Ohio International competition on April 9.
Davis’s platform is “United We Serve,” which Davis uses to share her passion for service.
“Community service has always been really important to me, whether it be military service or firefighting or volunteering at church. It’s important for me to give back to the community where I reside,” she says.
Davis, a graduate of Miami University, uses pageantry as a vehicle to promote volunteerism in Ohio.
“Pageantry gives me a foot in the door that I wouldn’t have on my own. It’s easier for me to go to a school say, ‘I’m Miss Pickerington and I’d like to speak with your kids about community service,’ than if I was just Sophia. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with teachers, local officials, and senators to talk about my community.”
With misconceptions about pageantry common, Davis notes how her experience has shaped her.
“As a first generation American, I have a different appreciation for the freedom we have as American citizens. I love being able to participate in pageants using that to serve my community,” she says.
Representing her hometown is exciting for Davis, who credits the city of Pickerington with sparking her interest in pageantry.
“I love Pickerington, I grew up in Pickerington. I started competing in the Miss Violet Festival as a teenager, and it’s what got me started with pageantry,” she says.
Davis plans on continuing to use pageantry in the future as a way to share her values with others, but has other plans as well.
“I’m really committed to my platform, ‘United We Serve.’ I’m currently in graduate school and hope to get a job with a local nonprofit here in Columbus.”
Davis placed as third runner-up and ranked as most photogenic.
