If the mid-week blues have you feeling bored,
there’s a weekly remedy to help you get over the hump. Every Wednesday at the Pickerington Senior Center, locals gather for friendly but serious euchre tournament.
For more than 20 years Pickerington residents have joined up to play the game. Evolving into a community event, the weekly tournament provides a friendly and relaxed atmosphere for old friendsto catch up and trick (or trump) their opponents.
Easily the center’s most popular event, the word is getting out that these players are a force to be reckoned with for all comers. Directed by center’s Director Nancy Lee and volunteer Ruth Ann Cunningham, the tournament lasts from 1 to 4 p.m. Each card shark throws $2 in the pot, which is divvied among the winners.
Some residents have been table-talking at the center for years. Myrtle Boggs has been to every euchre tourney for almost two decades, demonstrating her talent by winning frequently and being a great sport. “We are a nice, friendly group of people who enjoy playing cards. We would love to have new guests,” says Myrtle as she laid down her hand.
The environment is indeed friendly, set up in the open hall with lots of tables. A spread of donuts, snacks and hot coffee keeps the players well-energized and it providesa nice break from trumping their challengers. A typical turnout is 20-40 players, but there is plenty of room for more.
Amber Park Assisted Living Community, which is located at 401 Hill Road, also brings residents to participate in the center’s events as well as hosts their own activities for seniors including a beach party at the end of July. Contact Amber Park for future events by calling 614-834-3113.

Most of the work of maintaining the building/grounds and fundraising is performed by the members themselves.
