Day at the Park(s)
Upper Arlington’s 22-acre Northwest Park, located at 4840 Stonehaven Dr., was renamed the Northwest Kiwanis Park at a ceremony May 16.
The
2010 Leadership Upper Arlington class welcomed community members to Sunny 95 Park in May for the city’s Spring Fling event.
As part of their course requirement, each Leadership UA class completes a community-based project. This year’s class focused on raising awareness for the Sunny 95 Historic Barn Restoration project. The class came to this decision after learning about the restoration of the community’s oldest remaining farm structure, the McCoy Legg Barn. The barn dates from the early-to-middle 1800’s and will be rebuilt with both original and new materials. The “new” barn will serve as a year-round venue for community events. The McCoy Legg Barn will be restored near the corner of Carriage Hill and Windham Road at Sunny 95 Park.
Members of the 2010 class are: Justin Bates, Eric Carine, Kaye Emans, Lauren Emond, Jason Fine, Kate Hemleben, Elizabeth Mangas, John Mangas, Rand McClellan and Jason Wulf. For more information, visit www.leadershipua.org

UA residents honored for service to the arts
The 2010 CAPA Gala, held in May at the Southern Theatre in Downtown Columbus, honored long-time CAPA supporters and Upper Arlington residents Barbara and Dr. Ralph Lach.
In tribute to their service to the Central Ohio arts community, CAPA renamed the Ohio Theatre box office The Barbara and Dr. Ralph Lach Box Office at the Ohio Theatre.
Current board Member Barbara has served on the CAPA Board of Trustees for 30 years and is also a charter member of the CAPA Colleagues volunteers. She also serves on the boards of the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Friends of the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden, Lincoln Theatre Association and the Jazz Arts Group.
A love of the arts brought Barbara and Dr. Ralph Lach together, and has been a hallmark of their marriage for 50 years. Putting down roots in Columbus in the 1960s, Ralph busied himself with a cardiology practice, as Barbara dedicated herself to a variety of civic organizations while simultaneously working as a Columbus realtor. Throughout the years, their contributions to CAPA and other Columbus arts organizations have improved civic life in a city where they have raised eight children.
UA student wins Addiction Science Award
In May, Ameya Ashish Deshmukh, a 16-year-old junior at Upper Arlington High School, won first place at the National Institute on Drug Abuse Addiction Science Award ceremony at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest science competition for high school students.
A project using cutting edge computer modeling to identify potential new medications for nicotine addiction earned him the distinction. Deshmukh’s winning project was titled “Rational Drug Design Methods for the Identification of a Novel Negative Allosteric Modulator of a4b2 Nicotinic Receptors.” Because identifying a molecule that will effectively bind to nicotine receptors can be like finding a needle in a haystack, Deshmukh used what is known as rational drug design. He first selected candidate molecules based on previous research. He then used computerized molecular models to narrow the list of potential compounds. Finally, he tested these on human cells to identify which compounds show promise for treating nicotine addiction.
First place earns Deshmukh a $2,500 scholarship. For more information, visit www.nida.nih.gov/sciencefair

Teenage members from Upper Arlington’s Covenant Presbyterian Church hosted a World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine event in late April. During the event, they fasted for 30 hours and constructed and slept in cardboard shelters to raise money for world hunger, poverty and homelessness. The day after this fast, the youths also joined forces with Ohio Muslims, Islamic Family Services, Art of Living, First Unitarian Universalist Church and residents of Columbus’ Near East Side to participate in a community clean up day in Franklin Park as part of the “Keep Columbus Beautiful” initiative. This project was the first joint service event by the newly-formed Columbus Interfaith Youth Group.
