Historical Society highlights Ohio's most embarassing moments

Curators at the Ohio Historical Society have begun posting a series of blogs titled “The Top 10 Most Embarrassing Moments of Ohio History." The list was unveiled March 3.

The blog highlights quirky, awkward and sometimes humorous moments in state history. Submissions were accepted from the society's curators who then voted to list them and in what order. The moments will be unveiled one at a time, starting with 10 and counting down the "most embarassing moment in Ohio history."

“History is chock full of blunders and bad ideas,” says Elizabeth Higgins, a history curator at the society. “Instead of sweeping them under the carpet, the Ohio Historical Society has chosen to memorialize these missteps in a list.”

Topics include a military blunder, a near national disaster and an infamous prison break. Events that some might characterize as embarrassing, but occurred recently enough in our state's history have been avoided.

“We hope that it will provide as much enjoyment to read as it was to create,” Higgins adds. “Our audience may be inspired to dig deeper into Ohio history to suggest more embarrassing moments for future additions to the list – or other topics for a top 10 list.”

The list can be found specifically at http://ohiohistory.wordpress.com, accessible through the society's main Web site.
