Get green at City of Dublin eco-friendly events

Dublin residents will have a chance to clean up their homes and the planet with two upcoming "green" events.

The annual Mike Utt Scioto River Clean Up will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 15 at Scioto Park, 7377 Riverside Dr. There will also be an electronics recycling and canned food collection event from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. the same day at Ashland Inc., 5200 Blazer Parkway.

The Scioto River clean-up event is spearheaded by the city's Green Team. Volunteers for the Green Team will canoe from the dam to the Emerald Parkway bridge, walking the river banks to collect trash. Adults, kids and families are encouraged to join the clean up effort. To make the event more exciting, a contest will be held for "The Grossest," "Most Mysterious," and "Oldest" item pulled from the river. To sign up, e-mail or call 614-410-4406.

The electronics recycling event, sponsored by the City of Dublin, Ashland Inc., Smurfit-Stone and Possitivity Green, will offer free, safe disposal of electronic equipment for consumers and businesses using the services of Possitivity Green. The event will also double as a food drive and fundraiser, providing assistance to people and families in need through the Mid-Ohio Food Bank's Operation Feed campaign.

"E-waste" considered appropriate for the recycling event includes cell phones, computers, printers, copiers and LCD monitors, among other items. When discarded in landfills, these items release hazardous chemicals and harmful toxins into soil and streams. Cracked monitors, household hazardous waste, televisions and stereos will not be accepted for recycling. Individuals with more than five items to recycle should contact Possitivity Green for a scheduled pickup. For more event information, call 614-846-4877.
