Thurber House presents Kaylie Jones

At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, Thurber House Evenings with Authors will present Kaylie Jones, acclaimed author of five novels, including A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries. The event will be held at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave.

Jones is the daughter of iconic author James Jones who wrote the classics From Here to Eternity and The Thin Red Line. She will read from her new book and memoir, Lies My Mother Never Told Me. This is the story of her unusual childhood, her battle with addiction and how it all affected her as a developing writer, daughter and as a mother herself.

In this revealing story, Jones revisits growing up in the 1960s and ’70s with her famous father and emotionally abusive mother, surrounded by her parents’ celebrated friends — writers, movie stars, diplomats and other glitterati. She was a daughter of privilege, but her life was defined by two constants: literature and alcohol. Her parents both drank heavily, fueling the illusion of glamour and perfection.

During adolescence, following the death of her beloved father, Jones also turned to drinking, using it as refuge from her pain.

Following the reading, Jones will take questions, chat with the audience about her writing and sign books that will be available for purchase. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, with discounts for students and seniors. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 614-464-1032 or visit www.thurberhouse.org.
