Farmer's market opens its season May 5

Returning to the streets with more delicious produce and homemade goods, the Uptown Westerville Farmers’ Market opens its 2010 season at 3 p.m. May 5.

Now in its fifth season, the market will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays through Oct. 27, at the corner of North State and East Home streets in Uptown Westerville.

Market patrons will get the chance to shop ever-changing seasonal fare, including farm-fresh certified organic, chemical-free and conventional fruits and vegetables, heirloom produce, an assortment of baked goods, breads, cheeses, jams, vegetarian burgers, chutneys, spreads, sauces and rubs, pantry fare, raw honey and honey products, pet treats, maple syrup, meats, poultry and fresh eggs.

Market fare also includes a seasonal selection of flowering, herb, and vegetable plants, hanging baskets, potted flowers and colorful fresh-cut flowers.

Early seasonal fresh produce selections include asparagus, rhubarb, lettuces, and swiss chard.

The 2010 Uptown Westerville Farmers’ Market will feature these returning vendors throughout the season: Amherst Greenhouse, Arjay Gourmet Foods, Batter and Bowl, Bildsten Landscape, Bird’s Haven Farms, Blue Jacket Dairy, Bridgman Farm, Carousel Watergardens Farm and Cathy’s Tasty Treats, Doran’s Family Farm, Eyestone Flower Farm, Flying J Farm, Honey Health Farm, Landrum Cottage, Luna Burger, Malabar Peach Orchard, Northridge Organic Farm, Pleiades Maple Products, Sue’s Kitchen, and Sweet Thing Gourmet.

The farmers’ market also welcomes new vendors: Triple J Farms (featuring a selection of fresh meats, poultry, and eggs) and Branstool Orchard, which will bring sweet cherries, peaches and apples to market beginning in mid-June.

For the third year, the farmers' market and Westerville Area Resource Ministry are teaming up for the WARM Fresh Green Program, making farm-fresh, healthy foods available to everyone in the Westerville City School District. Fresh Green participants receive vouchers to purchase fresh produce, meats, poultry, eggs, artisan foods and fruit-bearing plants. In 2009, market vendors honored $2,470 in Fresh Green vouchers.

In-lot and on-street free parking is available near the market and throughout Uptown Westerville. There is bike-friendly parking in Rotary Park at the southeast corner of North State and East Home streets.
