D'Oh-tally Worth the Wait!
The Simpsons Movie relies on successful old tricks
By: Chris Alexis
I’ve been hearing talk of a Simpsons movie for years now. After all, it’s been one of the longest running shows on television. Babies born on the night of the series premiere are now high school graduates.
So, after years of talk and rumors – was it worth it?
D’oh-tally!
Director David Silverman, who helmed Monsters, Inc., is also a veteran director of the series, so the film naturally felt like an extended episode of the cartoon.
But it wasn’t just an extended episode – they did more with it. There were a lot of creative and very humorous things done in the movie that had the audience rolling on the floor throughout the film.
Homer, being the lazy idiot we’ve always loved him to be, causes an overflow of waste in the Springfield’s river and creates a toxic hazard that causes the government to seal off the city. It goes without saying that mayhem ensues between not only Homer and the rest of the city, but between Homer and his family.
The film version pushes the envelope a little farther as far as what they’re willing to put up on screen. I won’t give anything away, but I will say the film does earn its PG-13 rating.
The use of computer animation for backgrounds instead of a completely standard animation style also made the movie a little larger than life as compared to the series and worked well visually, giving more it even more of that “movie” feel.
Overall, this is a very funny movie. If you’re a fan of the series, you’re sure to love it. If you’re aware of who the Simpsons are, but haven’t watched much - don’t worry. There’s not exactly a lot of deep back story required to understand anything here.
The Simpsons are definitely going to make a return to the small screen in the near future. I hope they make it back to the big one, too.
But this time, let’s hope the babies born during the series premiere aren’t over the hill for The Simpsons 2.
