Five Things To Do This Week!
CityScene's Picks (June 25-July 2)
Five Things June 25-July 2
1. Picnic with the Pops & Popcorn with the Pops (Fri. and Sat. June 26-27)
Saturday, Albert-George Schram conducts two Broadway Divas together for the first time singing selections of Broadway classics with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Both women played Elphaba (better known as the Wicked Witch of the West) in Wicked and will take the vocal reigns on old and new classics, including favorites from Wicked, Gypsy, Chicago, Ragtime, Funny Girl and more. On Friday, come for Popcorn with the Pops, a childrens’ show with a “Rain, Rain, Go Away,” theme. www.columbussymphony.com
2. Late-night Flicks presents Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (Friday, June 25, 11 p.m.)
Part of CAPA’s summer movie series at the Ohio Theatre, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is an Oscar-nominated black comedy featuring a demented Bette Davis and an aging Joan Crawford. The two starlets, in their twilight years, spend time in a rotting Hollywood mansion in this movie billed as a “campy melodrama.” Oh, and if you come dressed as Joan Crawford or Bette Davis, admission is free. Just don’t bring any wire hangers, to honor Ms. Crawford. www.capa.com
3. Circurious at the Southern Theatre (Sat. June 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sun. at 3 p.m.)
A “heart-stopping mind-boggling display of artistry and athleticism,” Circurious swings into the Southern Theater this weekend, combining the artistry of Broadway, the musicality of a concert-hall performance and the spectacle of the circus. Aerialists, acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, illusionists, singers, dancers and more will combine in an adrenaline pumping feast for your eyes and ears. www.circurious.com.
4. Powell Festival (Sat. and Sun. June 25-26, all day)
Head north to Powell with the other 20,000+ visitors for the 14th annual Powell festival, featuring food vendors, merchants, animal visits, a dozen live bands and more. Is there anything better than fair fries and lemonade? There are also over 200+ free activities, so it won’t break your pocketbook. Village Green Park, 47 Hall St. in Powell. www.visitpowell.com
5. WaterFire with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra (Fri. June 25, 7-10:30 p.m.)
Visit the downtown riverfront at Genoa park to see bonfires floating up and down the Scioto river while the Columbus Jazz Orchestra provides entertainment. Take your sweetheart, because floating bonfires, a city view and the sounds of a jazz orchestra is much more romantic than the mud and crowds at Comfest. www.waterfirecolumbus.com
6. BONUS! German Village Haus und Garten Tour (Sunday, June 27, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.)
Visit historic German Village for a daylong celebration of innovative design and award-winning restorations inside the homes and gardens of the residents. What’s more, there will be demonstrations, a “Marketplatz,” and enough home and garden enthusiasm to spark some remodeling ideas of your own. www.germanvillage.com
7. BONUS! Actors’ Theatre of Columbus presents Treasure Island (8 p.m. Fri.-Sun. June 25-27)
It’s the final weekend to see The Actors’ Theatre’s presentation of Treasure Island, the classic swashbuckling story of a boy who gets entangled with a group of pirates on a chance encounter in the Caribbean. The Actors’ Theater will continue to run their free shows in German Village’s Schiller Park, but this is your last chance to see this tale of piratical intrigue. Oh, and did we mention it’s free? www.theactorstheatre.com
