Columbus Zoo prepares for annual Brew at the Zoo event

On Aug. 28, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will hold its fifth annual Brew at the Zoo fundraiser. The event features live music, the chance to mingle with animals and win prizes, all while tasting a selection of beers and benefiting programs at the zoo.

The event is for adults 21 and older and is a non-traditional fundraiser, says Jonathan Hotaling, special events manager at the zoo.

“This fundraiser is put on with the help of our Friends of the Zoo organization, which does a great job raising sponsorships and securing food donations,” he says. He adds that it is one of Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s largest fundraisers, with more than 1,000 guests expected to attend.

While Brew at the Zoo certainly offers the chance for Columbus-area beer connoisseurs to get their fix, Hotaling says that the event is more about a fun, entertaining atmosphere with good food and beer.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium formed a partnership with Barley’s Brewing Company, and several of its brews, including Cherry Porter, McLAren's Scotch Ale and Bombshell Blonde Ale will be featured. Ten total selections are expected to be on draft.

The after hours event also includes live music by the Nate McDonough Band, raffle prizes and other games. Proceeds support Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.columbuszoo.org and are $35 through Aug. 23 and $45 after. Ticket price includes 12 samples of beer and six appetizers.
