BalletMet Columbus will host "Choreography Weekend," featuring remarkable performances showcasing local artists. On Friday, April 11, see new work by talented emerging choreographers in the BalletMet Company. On Saturday, April 12, enjoy the beauty of liturgical dance. Both concerts will be held at the BalletMet Performance Space, 322 Mt. Vernon Ave., in Downtown Columbus.
The April 11 performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. when BalletMet presents innovative new choreography from some of its promising company dancers. The featured choreographers are BalletMet Company dancers who participated in the Columbus Choreography Project.
Supported by the Greater Columbus Arts Council and BalletMet, the Columbus Choreography Project, which began in 2004, provides funding and a venue for local dance artists to explore the choreographic process.
The diverse works range from contemporary to modern jazz. Featured choreographers at the April 11 BalletMet showcase include seven company dancers who made the semifinal round of the Choreography Project: Christian Broomhall, Justin Gibbs, Christine Mangia, Jimmy Orrante, Emily Ramirez, Jackson Sarver and Jeff Wolfe.
Company dancer Adam Hundt will also unveil a new work, which was initially developed by a Fellowship Initiative Grant from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet. The grant supports the development of new choreography in a studio setting.
The performances on April 12 will be held at 2 and 5 p.m., when BalletMet and Ministry in Motion/Ohio Worship Arts Association in collaboration with the King Arts Complex present Progression of Praise liturgical dance concert. For tickets, call the BalletMet Box Office, at 614-229-4848 or Ticketmaster at 614-431-3600. Tickets are $7 general admission.
The concert will showcase the diverse and gifted liturgical dance community. Artists will present works that honor the tradition and spirit of liturgical dance.
Artists who are interested in presenting a work at the concert should call 614-586-8635 or email . There is a five-minute time limit for dances and the participation fee is $10. The fee is waived for participants of a liturgical dance workshop that was held in February by BalletMet and Ministry in Motion in collaboration with the King Arts Complex.
