Arts scholarship applications now available

For students in search of college scholarships, applications are now available for the Doris Nelson Arts Scholarship and The Judith Chalker Literary Arts Scholarship. These scholarships, which are intended for high school seniors who reside in Upper Arlington and plan to pursue the arts, are co-sponsored by the City of Upper Arlington's Cultural Arts Division and UA Arts. The application deadline is April 17, 2009.

The Doris Nelson Arts Scholarship is named for the City of Upper Arlington’s first arts manager. There are two $1,000 scholarships awarded to Upper Arlington high school seniors who plan to continue further study in the arts. These scholarships will be awarded to students who create and/or perform vocal music, instrumental music, dance, theater, film, video and visual arts.

Named for the City of Upper Arlington’s second arts manager, The Judith Chalker Literary Arts Scholarship is a $1,000 award granted to an Upper Arlington high school senior who plans to study literary arts. It will be awarded to a student who creates fictional work (drama, fantasy and poetry) or non-fiction (biography, essay and narrative non-fiction).

The Cultural Arts Division has assisted more than 35 students dedicated to studying the arts since 1996, when these scholarships were established. Past recipients of the scholarships have gone on to arts internships, arts colleges and careers in the arts.

Winners will be announced the week of May 4, 2009. For more information, contact a high school counselor, call the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division at 614-583-5310 or apply online at
