There’s a new batch of summer movies heading your way, and there are no superheroes or giant fighting robots to be found.
Beginning July 6, the Wexner Center for the Arts will begin its series, “Summer Abroad: A Tribute to Janus Films.” This is a series of international films from such countries as France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Russia, Spain, Japan and the former Yugoslavia. In total, 13 films will be shown.
Janus Films is a distributor whom the Wexner Center has worked with for years. It has many classic titles to its name, such as The 400 Blows and Rules of the Game.
“This series is a collection of some of the greatest films ever made by some of the world’s greatest filmmakers,” says Dave Filipi , Curator of the Film/Video Department of the Wexner Center. "We are presenting the films in the best possible manner, in new 35mm prints on the big screen with great sound.”
Filipi says it’s a great chance for people to revisit some of the great, classic films and for others to be introduced to them who have never seen them before.
“The chance to see these films as intended, on film, in a theater with an audience, can’t be overstated,” he says. “It’s a much different experience than sitting at home and watching them on TV.”
This is the second summer the Wexner Center has presented a series titled “Summer Abroad,” however the last one was not just Janus Films. The Wexner Center presents a summer film series each year devoted a multitude of topics.
For moviegoers interested in learning more about the filmmakers, Filipi suggests www.mastersofcinema.com, www.sensesofcinema.com or www.criterionco.com. He also says film notes will be handed out at the screenings.
The first screening of the series is Rules of the Game, starting at 7 p.m. on July 6. Tickets are $7 for the general public, $5 for Wexner Center members, students and senior citizens, and are available at the Wexner Center ticket office.
