ABBA-cadabra!
MAMMA MIA! returns to Columbus for Ohio Theatre run

It premiered in London in 1999 with the cast and crew having no idea how it would be received. Ten years later, the ABBA-inspired musical MAMMA MIA! has more international productions playing than any other musical, making it a global phenomenon.

Presented by Broadway Across America - Columbus, MAMMA MIA! brings its infectious brand of entertainment to The Ohio Theatre July 7-12.

In the spring of 1975, the song “Mamma Mia” was the last track recorded on ABBA’s third (self-titled) album. The single would help establish the Swedish group as an international act and aid in the conception of the hit musical.

Written by Catherine Johnson, the story is set on a Greek Island on the eve of a woman’s wedding. As she sets out to discover her father's identity, three men - each of whom could be her missing parent - come back into her mother’s life. The musical communicates a message of love, laughter and friendship to its audience.

MAMMA MIA! appeals to a young demographic consisting of mostly women, says Allison Thomas, direction of public relations for Broadway Across America - Columbus.

“It lends itself to multi-generations,” she says. “It is a favorite show where people can see it more than once. Mothers will bring daughters, then the daughters grow up and bring their daughters and so forth.”

This year’s cast, led by Michelle Dawson and Rachel Tyler, recently performed at the 2009 Tony Awards. With the stellar cast and venue, Central Ohio audiences are sure to enjoy the return of ABBA's beloved musical.

“It’s been four or five years since MAMMA MIA! has come to Columbus, and Columbus is a great market for theatre productions,” Thomas says.
