A New Kind of Getaway
Fitness resorts and spas rejuvenate your mind and body
Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to get a new lease on life. If you’re having trouble finding inspiration in your same old surroundings this spring, why not book a trip out of town for a jumpstart? Today, there are hundreds of fitness-focused resorts, spas and retreats available. Whether you’re looking for pampering at a spa after a day of yoga and desert hikes, or a boot camp-style retreat, complete with a diagnostic health assessment, the options are endless.

While referrals from those who’ve gone before are the best way to determine what place and type of program is right for you, the Internet can also be a good place to preview a great assortment of the fitness-minded getaways available. Most destination spas allow guests to pursue individual goals by choosing from an extensive menu of activities and programs, ranging from fitness and nutrition to spirituality. It’s all spelled out right there on the World Wide Web.

There also are travel agents who specialize in health and wellness adventures and can guide you in choosing the right facility to match your needs. (I don’t know about you, but I prefer to entrust my travel plans to an actual person, just in case I run into problems).

Reality TV has sparked a new breed of destination boot camps. These facilities are not for the faint of heart, and not for someone looking for rest and relaxation. The Live-In Fitness Camp, in Marina Del Ray, Calif., warns that would-be visitors won’t have much down time. Five to seven hours each day are spent exercising. The facility prides itself on getting results and helping visitors maintain their newfound fitness levels after they return home. A personalized program is designed around an individual’s goal; whether it is to walk a mile, run a marathon, drop 15 pounds, or 50.

In addition to the modern-day fat farm, there is another brand of spas gaining notoriety. These fitness adventure companies invite travelers to visit exotic spots and experience the spectacular locations on foot. Hiking is a priority for some, but there are biking trips, too, and those that offer all of the above. Choose from dozens of locales in the United States, from Aspen and Sedona, to Santa Barbara and Jackson Hole. Overseas adventures include treks through the Himalayas, Hawaii, Africa and Asia, just to name a few.

If finding something that isn’t far is important, there’s the Greenbrier. It’s one of the oldest and most respected hotel/spas in the country. This luxury resort, built in 1778 in White Sulfur Springs, W. Va., is only a five-hour drive from Columbus. It offers every indulgence imaginable. The spa is award-winning, and if you want to try something different, there’s the Alpine Tower, which challenges even the most experienced climbers. This 55-foot tower has 20 routes and is great for group team-building, as well as individual challenges.

Also close to Central Ohio is the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Not only does it boast a beautiful spa, but the chef will prepare a healthy menu, and the facility invites you to explore miles of hiking trails. You’ll find Nemacolin in Farmington, Penn., a 205-mile drive from Columbus.

If you’re open to any type of fitness spa, www.spafinder.com will help guide the way. Here’s to a wonderful getaway that will do wonders for you body and soul!
