A Mona Lisa Voice...
Jazz singer, guitarist, and songwriter Madeleine Peyroux melds jazz standards with more contemporary influences like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, winning audiences over with lush live performances and three albums.
Peyroux’s most recent offering, Half the Perfect World (2006), debuted at No. 33 on Billboard’s Top 200 and topped Billboard’s traditional jazz chart. CAPA presents Madeleine Peyroux with special guest Doug Wamble at the Southern Theatre (21 E. Main St.) on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 pm.
Madeleine Peyroux’s “old soul” became apparent with the release of her 1996 debut album, Dreamland, a remarkably knowing work in which the then-22-year-old singer brought commensurate insightfulness to material associated with Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and Patsy Cline.
While Dreamland and her follow-up release, Careless Love, drew on writers and singers from the first half of the 20th-century, the bulk of Half the Perfect World focuses on artists and writers from the 32-year-old artist’s lifetime. Tracks include covers of Leonard Cohen (Blue Alert and the title song), Harry Nilsson (Everybody’s Talkin’) Joni Mitchell (River), and Tom Waits (Looking For the Heart of Saturday Night). The album also features the classic tunes Smile and Summer Wind, as well as four Peyroux-penned selections.
Special guest guitarist Doug Wamble is a thoroughly modern musician with a sense of history, blending his roots in blues and gospel with a love of jazz and more contemporary popular music. Since his debut album in 2003, Wamble has been steadily building a reputation of stellar musicianship and a fresh look at classic sounds.
