Movie Review
A Gay Old Time
Chuck & Larry Playful and Stereotypical
Movies focusing on the gay community have been numerous throughout Hollywood – but few of them have been as wildly offensive, but had as much heart as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

The movie tells the story of recent widow Larry (played by Kevin James) being in a bad situation. Because of technical reasons, Larry’s kids are not the beneficiaries of his life insurance. He approaches his best friend, the womanizing Chuck (played by Adam Sandler) to legally become his domestic partner. That way, Chuck, the one person in the world Larry truly trusts, would become the beneficiary and could take care of his children. Both of them being firefighters, they face their mortality every day, so the issue is something neither of them take lightly.

When the government enters their life, looking for a possible fraud, Chuck and Larry go all out to make everyone believe they’re really gay.

I found this movie to be hilarious, but also understood how offensive it was, as well. Every stereotype about homosexuality is thrown in here. The wild costume parties of men in drag, gay men with very effeminate personalities and so on are just a few of the examples.

But it also carries a good message. The movie supports gay rights and tolerance as it portrays those who are biased against them as villains – such as a group of people who stand outside the costume party, demanding the gay people repent.

I have to say this movie also has a lot of heart. Despite the fact this film is a wacky comedy, there are some very tender moments in the film. The strong bond between Chuck and Larry seems genuine. You see what Chuck gives up in order to protect his friend’s family, and it’s actually somewhat moving. In fact, despite being a completely different type of movie, I would argue this movie shows a stronger and deeper connection between two men than Brokeback Mountain.

Both Sandler and James are spot-on in this movie. Their bickering relationship makes them appear like a real married couple. And this isn’t Punch Drunk Love or Reign Over Me. It’s the same old wacky Adam Sandler – funny voices and all.

The supporting cast is also great. Jessica Biel bounces well off Sandler (in more ways than one) and is mind-numbingly beautiful to boot. Steve Buscemi, playing a government inspector, is also hilarious. Ving Rhames shows he isn’t afraid to do anything on screen and Dan Akroyd is always fun to watch.

Overall, I recommend this movie. I laughed, and laughed hard, throughout most of it. I think most everybody will be able to as well.
